America's tax dollars at work

On this 4th of July, I came upon an unusual press release from NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) debunking the existence of mermaids:
But are mermaids real? No evidence of aquatic humanoids has ever been found. Why, then, do they occupy the collective unconscious of nearly all seafaring peoples? That’s a question best left to historians, philosophers, and anthropologists.

Did someone ask under FOIA what environmental protection mermaids are accorded? Probably the same level of protection as Bigfoot or Sasquatch, I would imagine.

There's a theory that somewhere along the line from ape to human, there is an "aquatic ape". Not mainstream, but it does have support of an Oxford professor.
